Oh the Places you’ll Go

Today is the first leg of our adventure.  We drive to Darwin (10 hours).  We’ve done this many times so I doubt we’ll consider it adventure-some!!  But it is always a good family time.

I’ve been thinking about some catch phrases that can help us keep our attitudes right and our focus right while we are away and with this in mind I intend to read Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr Seuss during this car trip.

Oh the Places You’ll Go is written to the individual (and may be a bit individualistic for my liking) but since that is not our family perspective we’ll read it with a different tone.

It starts off…

Congratulations! Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places!

You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself

Any direction you choose.

And though Dr Seuss is talking about physical direction it can also be construed to mean heart direction.    The phrase I want us to remember is:  You can steer yourself any direction you choose.  Attitude is a choice.  Attitude will take you places.

The reader is then taken to cities and out to the country – plenty of opportunity for adventure.  And then we are given a great lesson:

I’m sorry to say so

But, sadly, it’s true

That Bang-ups

And Hang-ups

Can happen to you.

You can get all hung up

In a prickle-ly perch.

And your gang will fly on.

You’ll be left in a Lurch.

Once again – stuff will happen while we are away, and it is our attitude that will help us through it.  I love this next bit – it talks of our attitude being our own personal responsibility:

And when you’re in a Slump

You’re not in for much fun.

Un-slumping yourself

Is not easily done.

There are many catchy phrases here to remind ourselves to keep our attitudes in check, to face our problems, to be bold, and to enjoy what is in front of us.  I may just tuck this book into my backpack and read it more than once while we are away!

  1. So excited for you guys 🙂 We’re all thinking of you and looking forward to following you on your grand adventure! And will definitely be reading that one to the kids soon as we’re just about to start an author study on “Dr Seuss”. Travel safe and enjoy 🙂
